Rudolf Těsnohlídek’s original newspaper novella/cartoon of Liška Bystrouška

There aren’t many operas that started life as a serialised comic story in a local newspaper (see above). In fact, to the best of my knowledge there’s only one – Janáček’s Cunning Little Vixen. The Czech title, Příhody lišky bystroušky actually translates as Tales of Vixen Sharp-ears, the English language title is being taken from the German version of the work’s name, Das Schlaue Füchslein (i.e. The Cunning Little Vixen).

While he retains much of its humour, Janáček transforms the straightforward, funny, newspaper series into something much more profound: a musing on youth, love and old age.
