10. Marching orders

We finish with Mozart and baritones.

At the end of Act 1 of The Marriage of Figaro, due to his would-be philandering – which, it would seem, includes in his hopeful conquest the Countess – the young page Cherubino is to be sent off by Count Almaviva to join the army. Figaro gives the teenager some tongue-in-cheek information and advice about the new recruit’s not so rosy future.
