Debussy, Schönberg, Stravinsky

… and above are the three people responsible.

Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune was the first (1894) to break the mould, then came the famous (or infamous) ‘other planet’ of the last movement, Entrückung [Rapture], of Schönberg’s Second String Quartet (1908); and lastly, in 1913, came that civil disturbance-inducing ballet, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

Each, in their different ways, freeing music from the constraints of traditional harmony; allowing dissonance free rein.
