10. The sound(s) of music?

Krzysztof Penderecki 1933 – 2020

Krzysztof Penderecki compositional career is one of a move from the avant-garde of the 1960s, most famously the sonorist, graphic scores of such works as the Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima:

… through to the occasional introduction of more traditional notation and texture that’s to be heard in his major religious work, the St. Luke Passion (you can hear the whole work by clicking here):


Finally, by the time of the Third Symphony (of eight), the traditional neo-Romantic elements had won out – no graphics, no cutaway just a normal – both acoustically and visually – symphonic score:
