It may seem rather inconsistent of me, having criticised the liberties taken by the more outré modern productions of eighteenth and nineteenth (and twentieth!) century operas, to present you with this performance of Don Giovanni from the Aix–en–Provence festival, where, while the costumes are fairly traditional, little else is – I’ll be interested to hear your comments. Next week, when we consider Act II, the production will be of a more ‘traditional’ sort. (Whatever you think of this performance, the singing’s quite good!)
If you’re pressed for time, among the highlights of Act I are the opening scene, Leporello’s Catalogue Aria, the duet between the Don and Zerlina (Là ci darem la mano!), Donna Elvira’s Ah, fuggi il traditor!, the tenor aria (Don Octavio) Dalla sua pace, Giovanni as (rather breathless!) party organiser in Fin ch’hau dal vino, and Zerlina’s Batti, batti, o bel Masetto!
