In September 1840 Robert Schumann married Clara Wieck, in spite the opposition of her father. The year was also – mostly because of this event – Schumann’s Liederjahr (his song year) in which he composed no less than five song cycles: Liederkreis, [Song Cycle] Op. 24 (settings of Heine); Myrthen, Op. 25 (settings of several poets including Burns, Goethe and Heine); Frauen-Liebe und Leben [Woman’s Love and Life] (Adelbert von Chamisso); Liederkreis, Op. 39 (Eichendorff), and Dichterliebe [A Poet’s Love], Op. 48, (Heine)
