One of the strangest pieces of chamber music that I know is Janáček’s Capriccio. Subtitled Vzdor [Defiance], it was written at about the same time as the Glagolitic Mass (1926). Its strangeness comes from the instruments for which it’s written: piano, left-hand only; brass sextet (2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tenor tuba); and flute! Hmm…
The piano left hand can be explained by the fact that it was written in response to a request by the pianist Otakar Hollman, who had lost the use of his right hand during the First World War; but the rest of the ensemble??
Like much Janáček, against all the – not inconsiderable – odds, it works and contains moments of real poetry.
Meanwhile, back at the Mass, it’s time to explore the main body of the work – the Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei:
00:39 Intrada
02:26 Úvod – Prelude
04:39 Gospodi pomiluj – Kyrie
08:17 Slava – Gloria
14:59 Vĕruju – Credo
27:07 Svet – Sanctus
33:38 Agneče Božij – Agnus Dei
38:50 Varhany sólo [Postludium] – Organ solo
41:34 Intrada [Exodus]
