Carl Czerny (1791-1857)
Carl Czerny was a brilliant technician, a pupil of Beethoven and the teacher of several famous pianists of the next generation, including Franz Liszt. Among his considerable compositional output are a series of didactic études/studies aimed at improving pianistic technique.

Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870)
Ignaz Moscheles was a virtuoso pianist and a friend and sometime assistant – he prepared the piano score of Fidelio – of Beethoven. He taught Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, eventually moved to London and became ‘Pianist to Prince Albert’. He also gave the first public performance of the Hammerklavier Sonata.

Meanwhile, the instrument continues to change and improve – a chance to compare the tones of the products of the two leading French piano makers, Erard and Pleyel:
