The third Razumovsky Quartet has, despite Count Razumovsky’s request, no Russian folk tune embedded in it, but what it does have is a most scintillating fugal finale!
Moving on from the sound world of the major works that cluster around 1806 – the date of the three Razumovsky Quartets – there are two isolated works: the so-called Harp Quartet (E-flat, Op. 74, 1809) and the fascinating little Quartetto Serioso (f, Op. 95, 1810). This latter was an experiment which was intended, according to the composer “for a small circle of connoisseurs” and, he stipulated, “never to be performed in public”.
If you have the time, it’s really worth listening to all three!
