8. Beethoven

He was trouble from the very start…

… the dissonance that opened Beethoven’s First Symphony was just the initial salvo in the young symphonist’s engagement with the form.

The real tussle – as the autograph title page below bears witness – came with his Third, the Eroica Symphony; it resulted in a transformation of the form and a new radical approach to the harmony within it.
