8. Leonard Bernstein

Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990)

Composer, conductor, virtuoso pianist, educator, television personality, political radical – it’s difficult to know where to stop with the many-faceted personality/gifts of Leonard Bernstein. And even within one of these activities – composition – there are several subdivisions:

There’s the Broadway musicals…

…the ballets…

…the film music…

…the jazz…

… and then there’s the religious music – the Chichester Psalms

0:00 I. Psalm 108 vs. 2; Psalm 100, entire
3:35 II. Psalm 23 entire; Psalm 2, vs. 1-4
9:12 III. Psalm 131, entire; Psalm 133, vs. 1

… and his (typically eclectic and jazzy) Mass setting…

… and, finally, among a good number of other ‘classical’ works, there are three symphonies – No. 1, Jeremiah; No. 2, The Age of Anxiety; and No. 3, Kaddish; as you can gather from the titles, all are programmatic:

Jeremiah (entire):

Prophecy [0:25]
Profanation [7:46]
Lamentation [15:18]

The Age of Anxiety (part 2):
