We’ve listened to and looked at celebrations and festivals in opera, religious and orchestral music; now let’s turn our attention to song.
Songs can celebrate a whole range of things – the compliment of dedication to the person (or object) that’s the perceived recipient of the composition; declarations of love (e.g. serenades); nature; the mysteries of being, and even farewells!
Firstly (and why not?) a song dedicated to and celebrating music itself!
And, when the – human – object of your affection is far, far away, dedicating a song or two to them is comforting:
When the couple are eventually reunited and (maybe) get married, what better celebration of the happy event is there than a doubling up on dedication to, and description of, the beloved?
There are famous serenades,
…invitations to holidays –
at fantasy islands:
…or to somewhere that sounds suspiciously like Amsterdam:
It’s not just people, our love of nature also features –
… and, of course, the mystic and supernatural –
… I leave it to Schubert to do the impossible and turn saying goodbye to people and nature and everything else into a songfest –
