Mozart, in writing his trio, quintet and concerto for clarinet, did much to establish the instrument in chamber and orchestral music and as a concerto soloist. His favoured performer, Anton Stadler was the first of a number of clarinet virtuosi whose playing was to motivate composers to write for them.
Heinrich Bärmann is the player responsible for the Carl Maria von Weber quintet (plus works by several other composers including Mendelssohn and Meyerbeer); Weber also wrote two concertos and a concertino for him.
