Key elements

Modulation:

The action or process of passing from one key to another in the course of a piece of music; the result of this, as an element in the harmony of a piece; a change of key.

(OED)

Cadence:

The conclusion or ‘close’ of a musical movement or phrase.

(OED)

If you feel a sudden need to modulate (change key), chances are that you’ll reach for a handy cadence to ensure that the new key signature is firmly cemented in place. There are a number of sorts of cadences, some have an air of finality while others lead us further and further into the music (the one above is of the final sort).
