To finish with, some big choral works from the late 19th/early 20th century (1894-1936). They’ll furnish some (or all – none of them could be described as short!) of your Christmas holiday listening if you want, and also help get you into a good frame of mind for the new year with their distinctly positive slant on things.
There’s a resurrection without the concomitant judgement (Mahler), one of the most glorious of sunrises (Schönberg), a vast seascape (Vaughan Williams) and, to end with, the irreverent, licentious and rather boozy world of that bunch of mediaeval roisterers, the students known as the goliards (Orff).
00:00 – I. Allegro maestoso. Mit durchaus ernstem und feierlichem Ausdruck
23:02 – II. Andante moderato. Sehr gemächlich. Nie eilen
34:05 – III. In ruhig fließender Bewegung
44:36 – IV. „Urlicht“ (aus „Des Knaben Wunderhorn“).
Sehr feierlich, aber schlicht
50:47 – V. Im Tempo des Scherzos. Wild herausfahrend – Langsam. Misterioso
