From Liszt to Kurtág, Hungary has produced a series of very distinguished and influential composers: Liszt – together with Richard Wagner – was a prime mover in the Neudeutsche Schule [New German School] of composition; with their deep interest in their native folk music, Bartók and Kodály conjured a fascinating mixture of traditional elements and twentieth century harmony/structure; and, amongst the leaders of the mid-century avant-garde, we have two more Hungarians, Ligeti and Kurtág. A journey through nineteenth century France from Berlioz and his contemporaries, Adam, Halévy and Hérold, to the fin de siècle pre-Debussyian composers, Fauré and Chausson. A trip that sheds a fascinating light on not only Gallic musical culture, but also on a century of French political and social instability.
