From Liszt to Kurtág, Hungary has produced a series of very distinguished and influential composers: Liszt – together with Richard Wagner – was a prime mover in the Neudeutsche Schule [New German School] of composition; with their deep interest in their native folk music, Bartók and Kodály conjured a fascinating mixture of traditional elements and twentieth century harmony/structure; and, amongst the leaders of the mid-century avant-garde, we have two more Hungarians, Ligeti and Kurtág.
