Nine years were to elapse after the creative rush of opp. 9, 17 and 20 before Haydn returned to writing string quartets. When he did – in 1781 – it was with a new lightness of style and with his sense of humour to the fore. The ‘serious’, weight-making fugal finales of op. 20 were banished to make way for sparkling, witty rondos, and everywhere there was a new clarity of texture. The composer himself acknowledged this change when he described these quartets as composed auf eine gantz neue besonderer Art (in a new and special way)…
