This week it’s the turn of the brilliant G Prelude and Fugue from Book II.

Here’s the exposition of the fugue:

The articulations (staccatos, mezzo-staccatos, slurs, tenutos, etc.) are, of course, mine and serve to illustrate some of the sort of decisions (other than tempo) that interpreters have to make when approaching these pieces.

The Amazon? We’re now (since we started on Book II) listening to orchestral preludes and fugues; and, as I’m sure you know, the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos wrote a series of nine pieces –  Bachianas Brasileiras – which combined a hommage to Bach with the folk music traditions of his native country. You won’t be surprised to know that there are several fugues involved.

Course materials:

… and below (as ever!) is some general stuff – useful for intervals, key signatures, etc.
