A change of orchestration

Welcome to a slightly different set up.

For the next ten weeks the main content of this blog will be, not (as previously) mostly in written text, but in the spoken word and contained in a sound file (first example below!)

In addition, at the bottom of the post, there will be a ‘concert’ of works featuring an individual instrument.

Debussy’s late trio sonata has a magical sound world all of its own (we’ll be hearing more from the viola and the harp a little later):

Wonderful music, but where the hell do you breathe??

A chance to hear that rare creature these days, the wooden flute. How do you think its sound compares with its metal rival? A performance on period instruments.
